Axillary lymph nodes are a group of lymph nodes in your armpit (axilla) that drain the lymph fluid from your breast and arm. Everyone has a different number of axillary lymph nodes. An axillary lymph node dissection is a surgery to remove a group of axillary lymph nodes.

The lymph nodes get enlarged and swelling occurs along with severe pain in the upper limb area near elbow and shoulder. This condition is associated with skin diseases because the superficial lymphatic system is involved. The edema in enlarged epitrochlear lymph nodes is also seen along with pain in the arm especially in elbow region.

Lymph from lymph vessels in the upper limb (arm) feeds into the lateral group and is passed on to the central lymph nodes through efferent lymphatic vessels. The subscapular group is found in the posterior of the axilla inferior to the scapula, or shoulder blade.

This fluid may filter through lymph nodes at the elbow, or those under the arm. Fluid from the head, scalp, and face flows down through lymph nodes in the neck. Some lymph nodes are deep inside the body, such as between the lungs or around the bowel, to filter fluid in those areas.

The superficial lymph nodes of the head and neck receive lymph from the scalp, face and neck. They are arranged in a ring shape; extending from underneath the chin, to the posterior aspect of the head. They ultimately drain into the deep lymph nodes.
